Summer Fest
Hawaiian Style!
Nearly
everyone was decked out in their best and
brightest for Summerfest this year. Including
one brave man in a grass skirt who knows how to hula!
Many thanks to Lisa
Sparks for spearheading the decorating. She
did a fantastic job. And thanks to all who
supported her. Much appreciation as well to
all who cleaned up for days after.
It was great to see old
and new faces this year, enjoy a tasty catered
meal, and learn new recipes, like the Martin's
Famous Lemonade. Walmart may be officially
sold-out of two gallon jugs by now.
While
Tom Ricer may have been the legitimate winner
of the television giveaway, Dick & Carol
Reiner pulled a fast one on him when they
altered their ticket stub...Tom was fooled for
only a second.
There was quite a
variety of hats this year. One in particular,
modeled by Angie, had an interesting
shape...
The band was great, the
dancing fun and here's looking forward to
Summer Fest 2007!

Summerfest 2006 was a
BLAST! The yearly event took place June 17th at
the Rotunda. 160 + people attended the party.
This was a catered event with all the food
anyone cared to eat. The same delicious fare as
last year. The caterer, Steve McManus did his
usual wonderful job of providing lots and lots
of good food.
The Convertible Blondes entertained everyone
during the evening. They were probably the best
band we have had at any function lately. We even
had a "Twist Contest". Everyone twisted until
finally Gil and Colleen won. I hope they have
recovered from all that twisting.
We gave away several door prizes during the
evening. Also, the LCD Television was given away
to "Lucky" Tom Ricer.
The evening before several people gathered to
decorate, clean and get ready for the party.
Special thanks to Lisa Sparks for getting the
decorations.
Our Yacht Club membership stands at 100. We have
a great group of people that know how to enjoy
the parties at the best Marina on the Ohio
River.
The Poker Run and
club cook-out is coming up on August 12th. Mark
your calendars!
See ya there.

This
little black bird spent over six weeks fighting
with himself at the fuel dock pump until he
finally gave up.
And it appears the 2006
crop of babies are growing nicely! Here they are
taking a nap near the bridge.
Guest chef Nancy Hall will
be making her world-famous lasagna dinner at the
Holiday Point Cafe on Saturday, July 29th.
Nancy owns N&J Catering in
South Webster, Ohio and recently purchased the
Apache here at the marina.
If you'd like to be a
guest chef, sign-up in the office or at the
Cafe.
Thirty years ago in August
of 1976 (a July issue wasn't located), the
latest happenings and announcements included
appropriate channels to monitor when
communicating via CB, that a payphone was
available after marina office hours in case of
emergency, and mention of the Executive Dock
being relocated to the Bourbon Street area
because of a tornado.
A fourth of July parade
was held on the river from Worthington Marina to
the Ashland bridge with a Bar-B-Que that
followed here at the cove afterward.
There's also a brief,
interesting article about the Polyestermite; "A
colony of them could reduce a quarter ton boat
to a heap of white dust and fittings in a
season..."
And last, a release from
the Coast Guard about liability, the Good
Samaritan Clause and the Federal Boat Safety Act
of 1971.
Pick up a photocopy of the
1976 newsletter in the office at the marina to
read the full stories.
Aside
from the 1976 newsletter, yacht
club members Dick & Carol Reiner submitted some
snapshots.
Here they are
at the marina in 1968. A photo of the UFO when
it was still floating and painted blue, and a
fine example of craftsmanship and innovation --
look what can be made from a broken propeller!
Thank you
both for sharing the history!
"What makes
a river so restful to people is that it doesn’t
have any doubt—it is sure to get where it is
going, and it doesn’t want to go anywhere else."

Quiet Corner, The Dark Side, Kokomo & The Ghetto
This
just in...The Quiet Corner, is still quiet.
Which is exactly how they like it.
The Dark Side is still
dark. But they do have a
fabulous new sign welcoming all who dare enter.
On
the Kokomo side, Marvin's Bar has been a
happening place. Marvin....he'll serve you
anything you bring.
The
Ghetto is knocking out some kicking barbecued
chicken dinners and that lemonade? To die for!
Mike Clifford knows how to grill and the

New Gear for
Boaters
An
updated version of Magma's Marine model, this
15" grill features a new front-mounted igniter,
burner, and heat distribution system that
reduces flare-ups. It boasts a double-lined
inner safety shell that keeps the outside of the
grill cool to the touch, a corrosion-resistant
stainless-steel exterior, and a stainless-steel
Stay Cool handle. The hinged lid is balanced so
it won't slam shut as the boat rolls. It uses
standard disposable one-pound propane cylinders.
Dock Cart (Model

CPSC
Warns Consumers about Dangers of Tube Kiting
Two Deaths over the Past 3
Months Attributed to New Water Sport
WASHINGTON, D.C. – In advance of the July 4th
holiday weekend, the U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning consumers
about the possible dangers associated with a new
type of water recreation known as “tube kiting.”
CPSC is concerned about death and injury reports
associated with tube kiting. It is currently
investigating two versions of these products to
determine if there is a significant product
hazard.
Tube kiting is a relatively new form of extreme
water sport which is fast growing in popularity,
but also extremely dangerous. CPSC is aware of
at least two deaths associated with tube kiting
this year. A 33-year-old Texas man was killed in
late April 2006 while tube kiting, and a
42-year-old man died from injuries associated
with tube kiting on June 26, 2006 in Wisconsin.
CPSC is also aware of 12 serious injuries
associated with tube kiting. The injuries
include a broken neck, punctured lung, broken
ribs, broken femur, chest and back injuries, and
facial injuries, such as jaw fractures. A
14-year-old girl who was tube kiting lost
consciousness when it fell about 15 feet and
struck the water.
Tube kites are very large, sometimes round,
inflatable water devices that can be more than
10 feet in diameter. The tube is hooked to the
back of a boat by a tow rope, and the tube rider
pulls back on a rope as the boat travels at
speeds between 25 and 35 miles per hour. The
ride begins when the tube is lifted into the air
trailing the boat. Possible reasons for
incidents and injuries include: 1) rider’s
difficulty in controlling the tube, 2) boat
operator inexperience, and 3) how the tube
reacts in certain weather conditions. The
conditions of highest concern are wind gusts
that can cause the tube to spin out of control,
or sudden slowing or stopping by the boat
operator, which can cause the tube to nose dive
into the water. In some cases, the sudden
stopping of the boat might cause the tube rider
to continue past the boat and hit it or hit
other boats or stationary objects, such as a
bridge.
Donations welcomed for the
